With this activity, a Social Studies teacher will be working with a media specialist.
Media Specialists role - Help the students with location of maps either with what they may have on the shelves or on the internet. The media specialists will also help the 6th grade with the computer programs PowerPoint and Publisher. There will also be the opportunity for a distance learning activity with a travel agent.
For me, I worked with our 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Tina Benjamin. She put together a similar activity for her 7th grade Social Studies class. I asked her if I could observe her class during the activity. Then after the unit was over, I asked her what changes she would make. These experiences helped me create an activity that grows with the students. By the time I completed the lesson for the trip to Europe, it didn't resemble Tina's at all.
I also asked Tina how our media specialist could have helped. She wasn't sure, so I asked our media specialist, Denise Whisler, what she could do to help with an activity such as this. Denise explained how she has maps in the media center and has the beginning of a pathfinder to atlas resources.
